There is no doubt that Devon Jae is gifted with an insight of music and a soul-touching voice. The go-getter attitude is what makes her write and present songs that speak her heart out. She has a talent for writing genuine lyrics and composing melodious songs. She is a name that now speaks volumes and she is slowly becoming the voice of the youth with her new offering. It feels like you are just talking to yourself when you hear her sing as her songs are so on point and so truthful.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?
Thanks so much! That’s definitely one of my biggest goals with my music. I would say that usually, the beat comes first. I usually take a couple of minutes to sit and listen to whatever beat I’m attempting to write to, and then just freestyle a couple takes of melodies over the top. From there we find the best parts of each take and try to piece them together to form a cohesive, structured song.
Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?
That’s a hard one. It would probably be something that I haven’t released yet, to be honest. There are so many songs that haven’t been released yet that I’m really proud of and that I feel like show how versatile my music can be. I find that I’m most proud of the songs that I wrote when I was really passionate and need to make music for therapeutic reasons. They always seem to be the rawest and personal
If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?
In my opinion, if somebody really wants to make innovative music, they shouldn’t purposely try to do so. When people try to force authenticity it can appear noticeably contrived. I think that when people are just genuine and make the kind of music they truly like and want to listen to, it sounds the best. True authenticity is hard to come by but special.
What does it take to be “innovative” in music?
Like I said previously, I’ve been rehearsing a lot to prepare for live shows as well as making a ton of new music. 2018 should be a very big and productive year regarding live shows and new releases. I’m excited to see how it all plays out!
